LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Tho opening meeting of the above, held at the Druids’ Hall, Otaki, on Monday evening last, was of a most encouraging nature, and it is very evident, judging by tho enthusiasm sliown, that tlic Club will have a mast successful session. There was an attendance of about forty-persons. The president (Rev. G. F. Petrie, M.A.J made a few introductory remarks, in which he referred to the excellent work done by the Club in the past, and asked members to do their best; to get new members, and thus ensure a good session for this winter.

The following programme was gone through most successfully, each of the items being well received:—Pianoforte solos, Misses Ruth Swabey and Ethel Bills; recitations, Miss Kirk and Mr Byron Brewn (2); reading. Rev. G. Calvert, Blathwayt; songs, Misses Simcox, F. MeClclam! and Fearless, Messrs Young, of Mast in’ton (2), and Frank 1 cnn. A dialogue, in which four young girls (Misses G. Stevens, L. Hulmo, It. SwaWcy and O. JCorslmw) took part, was a pleasant diversion, and was much enjoyed, the young ladies all doing excellently.

It was decided to hold the meetings fortnightly, on Mondays, at (He. Druids’ Hull, the meetings to commence at 7.30 p.m. instead of at 8 p.m, as formerly. At; next meeting several essays will be read and discussed.

The syllabus is now practically completed, and it is hoped to have same printed in time for next meeting of the Club.
