About twenty returned soldiers were welcomed at Ohau on Wednesday night, the gathering being a record one for the district. Mr- W. H. Field, member for-the district, was present, and delivered an address of welcome to the soldiers, Lieut. J. C. Neill responding on behalf of the men.
It was pointed out at Wednesday's meeting of-the Otaki Fire Brigade that the present engine was absolutely useless iii case of fires which had secured a strong hold. It was meant for outbreaks in: incipient stages, and thus the matter of haviug sumps, or belter firefighting appliances, was informally considered. The same old bogey— no money—was raised, and 'the matter was allowed to drop. Messrs W. H. Field. M.P., aud G. M. Lethbridge (representing the Mount Hector Track Committee) will this evening confer with the Wairarapa Committee at Grey town relative to diverting their promised subsidy for a mountain hut to the improvement of the track connecting the Wairarapa with this coast, via Tararua ranges, aud also as to the site of the proposed hut.
A prominent Wellington architect gave a "Post" reporter the following example of the cost of building as accounting* for the scarcity of dwellings in Wellington, "T have just received tenders for a five-roomed cottage. The continued dry spell has been disastrous' for trout in the Otaki river, and it is a common occurrence to sec large numbers in small pools. A local resident, who promises to be a keen fisherman next season, has already lifted several hundreds and deposited them in the main stream. Unfortunately the Acclimatisation Society has no representative in this district.
