OTAKI PATRIOTIC SOCIETY
A meeting o'f the übovc was held at tho reading-room, Otaki, last night, when there wero present: Mr W. B. Smith (chairman), Mesdamcs Hodgson, Swabey and J. R. Bills, Rev. Petrie, Messrs L. St. George and Frank Penn. A considerable amount of corrcspon- * dencc was read, mostly of an unimportant nature. ' It was resolved, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mrs Hodgson, that Rev. Petrie and Messrs L. St. George and Frank Penn be appointed delegates .from tho Society to the Horowhcnua County Patriotic Association.
It was notified that the annual meeting of the County Association would be held at Levin on the L'Sth instr., and a cordial invitation was extended to all to attend.
Some discussion cMnod re an application for a grant for clothing outfit for a returned soldier. The meeting ultimately decided not to make any grant, feeling that the case did not call for special treatment. The Treasurer reported that receipts! since last meeting had totalled £l7 lSis i-'d, and expenditure £4 12=. The society now had a total credit balance, including bonds, of £205 17s lid. The Chairman suggested that the Society might hand over its funds to the County Association and close down. He felt that tho Society had ended its usefulness, by effluxion of. time. Mr St. George pointed out that tho County Association had expressed a wi<b. that the various societies might keep going, mainly for the purpose of attending to local cases of distress. Several of those present expressed the opinion that there was very little that the Society could do bow, and it
was pointed out that the Association representatives might well attend to any local requirements, However, after considerable discussion, h was decided that the Society continue its existence for the time being, it being suggested that an. expression of opinion be obtained from the County Association ae to the advisability of closing down or otherwise.
The Secretary reported that he had authoriJed' the Red* Cross ladies to dispose of articles of furniture handed over to them by the Society. His action was approved.
