PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

GEANTS TO BE MADE. At Saturday's meeting of the Horowhenua County Council a letter was received from the Minister of Public Works relative to peace celebrations, while an apx>lication was also made on behalf of Otaki for a grant to' help carry out celebrations. The chairman pointed out that" although the Minister had set aside three days for the celebrations, there were many places where . only two days w-ould be observed. In his district he believed Sunday and Monda3" would be observed, the second day to be set. apart for children. If the Council gave a grant it would be subsidised by the Government; but it was strange that the Otaki Town Board refused to give one, and for the Otaki residents to apply to the Council for help. Kikiorangi, he understood, intended to do everything by public subscription, and they wanted no grant, which was a right thing. .He did not believe in the useless waste of money on fireworks, and considered a talk with the children would have a better effect. Cr. Harkness said the Crs. in his riding were anxious to assist towards the celebrations, while Cr. Law said he had told the Shannon people they could tcly upon securing a grant. Cr. Catley said he was willing for the Council to give a donation, TJut objected to it being spent on fireworks. It was agreed that the Wirokino Riding give £25, Tokomaru £lO, and each of the Crs. in the Otaki and Te-Horo Ridings be enpowercd to expend up to £lO each.
