COST OF LIVING.
COMING DOWN. i Good news for (hose who eat food; ; not so good, perhaps, for those..who grow it. Owing to the long spell of ■ line weather throughout New Zealand the harvests of cereals ami potatoes tin: exceeding expectations, and in consequence of Ihe big yields oat traders anticipate having to handle a much larger volume of field products than seemed possible two months ago. Prices are, therefore, on the down grade (says the “Otago Daily Times”),'and at present merchants seem to be holding off, in (he expectation that when the full harvests come on to the market the values will approximate normal or prewar rates. This hesitation on the part of the merchants is making the marts very dull, for they do not know what the drop will amount to. The compensation is that the position is such as to indicate a possibility that the cost of living will be reduced to (he general public. As an example, we may mention that oats have fallen from 5s 3d to 3s Od f.o.b.
