A NEW POTATO.

In the Bay of Plenty district, on the northern bank of the Rangitaiki River, near a fresh water spring, a strong variety of edible potato is found growing among watercress (Nasturtium olticinah-j. The roots and tubers of the. plant are found from 1- to 17 inches below the water. The potatoes are of fair size and ripen as early as August; v. lnoi cooked they are w axy. Ml' D. it. boss sear some of 'the tubers to the .Momnnhaki Experimental Farm to see if they could be grown ou dry laud. Planted on August SI. 191(3, they gave vigorous plants with distinct foliage and large blue flowers which bore seedapples. The crop was lifted on February 6, .1917, and was free from disease. The yield was 1d.87 tons ver acre. 1.1 tons of which are marketable (table and seed) and 1.87 tons were pig potatoes. Boiling tests showed that the potatoes kept their colour well, but could not be classed as good cookers. The starch coj&ent appears to be high.
