WITH GERMAN WIVES.
astonishing conduct of ENGLISH SOLDIERS. A remarkable story- is told by the London "Pall Mall Gazette." It says that the Red 'Cross women at one "of the ports of repatriation found that some Englishmen returning from Ruhleben brought home their German wives. Tho nurses tended any sick German women without differentiation of treatment, Irut all the German women who were well were received with stony silence and no welcome. One Englishman was recognised i.,y a member of the Red Cross unit. On being greeted with,a hearty handshake, he presented his wife. The Red Cross workoi saw an extended hand, but paused. “ your wife is German?" she queried die had Spoken to the wife in Geraint!}. --I cannot shake hands with a German. ’ ’ " But this lady is iny wife, and therefore an Englishwoman-now," he said. <• Wo will not discuss it," the Red Cross worker replied, "your wife mar be called an Englishwoman, but there ■ire some things which she can never feel what real Englishwomen feel." One wonders what the future will sec regarding the British wives of Germans. and the German wives of Britons. if all Germans are to be banished from Britain and Germany retaliates by excluding all Britons from Germany.
