CHAUTAUQUA.

WHAT IS IT? ! Chautauqua is spreading over the thinking world like a wild bush fire. The idea originated at Chautauqua. New York State, where a number of congenial souls gathered in an outdoor j assembly for mental fellowship and j mutual advancement. .Later on other j communities fostered the idea, and invited speakers, dramatists, and musi- j elans to entertain and uplift them. . Twelve years ago the circuit plan was devised for Chautauqua Assemblies. ! This made it feasible for practically any community with open-minded citizens to enjoy the delights of Chautauqua week. Visitors to America from [ these lands were struck with the mar- • vellous power for uplift and enjoyment j in the movement, and as a result of j their enthusiastic appreciation,, the | eyes of the Chautauqua leaders were turned towards the democracies of the > South Seas, Levin being the centre of a number ; of thriving communities, the Chautau- I qua organisers offered its citizens an opportunity too splendid to let pass, and the finding of the necessary guarantors was not a difficult matter. Now we arc in sight of what promises to be the most notable week in the history of town and district. For a delightful week of good things the Chautauqua has provided well.
