WAIKANAE NOTES.

When Messrs Watson Bros., fishermen, of Waikanue, went to haul up their nets at Kapiti Island -the other day, they found that a large shark had Become entangled in the meshes, and had been stranded on the beach. Mr W. E. Bendall and Professor Kirk, who visited the island during the week-end. saw the monster, which is 2Sft fan long. 15ft in circumference, its jaw is 2ft iftja from side to side. The sharkßielongs to a strange species, the bone being soft, transparent and easily broken, the teeth small and curved inward, the eyes as large as a tea-cup, were set close together. The fishermen slated that they hud never seen a sijntlar specimen, and Professor Kirk has taken a portion of the tail to Wellington in an endeavour to establish the identify of the specie#. On Wednesday last a very successful sale of work, organised by the Waika- , nae Ladies’ Hewing Guild, was held in the Anglican Sunday School Hall in aid of the building fund. The ’commit!ee°were, as usual, most energetic and businesslike, and being favoured with fine weather and a fair amount of patronage, were fully satisfied with the. I result of their efforts. In all twentyfive pounds were realised, £5 of which sitm was donsifed by Mrs Campbell, of Mahara House. During the, evening musical items, guessing competitions, fruit salad, strawberries and cream, followed by a jolly dance, made the hours swiftly fly, and a happy, satisfied band joined lustily in the National Anthem and dispersed at midnight. Now that we are the lucky possessors of a hall and piano we are looking forward to some jolly evenings, and it is whispered that a series of little dances , and entertainments will be commenced in the near future to raise funds to further decrease the debt on the building.j The many friends of Mr A. T. Bate j will be pleased to learn -that there is a . slight improvement in his state of I health, and good hopes are entertained j for an early recovery. < Mahara House has its usual number 1 of holiday guests, amongst whom are our old friends, Captain and Mrs Hudson. Mr Harry Powell, of Kikiorasgj, who .has just lately returned from the front., is on a brief visit and is the guest-of Mr A. -Johnston. Mr Boy Bridger, formerly of Waikanae, and lately of the N.Z.E.F., has ; brought his bride to Waikanac on-dbeir honeymoon trip. ;
