THE CITY’S MILK.
IMPORTANT DEVELOPMENTS. BETTER RAILWAY FACILITIES j . URGED. I Matters are moving briskly in edn- | nection with the City Council's big milk | distribution scheme. The latest devclop- | meat, announced yesterday, is the lease | by the Council of a dairy factory at, j Otaki, where the manufacture of cheese . has already been commenced. The bulk j of the milk will be drawn from the 1 country near the city, it being flic intention of the Council that the Otaki receiving station will really act as it governor. The milk received at the sta-
tion and not required for Wellington will be made into cheese and other saleable products, and it is anticipated that the financial result will meet the net cost of running the station. Freezing rooms will be provided at Otaki, and in these the milk will be stored while awaiting transit, to Wellington.
To ensure a supply of fresh milk it is absolutely necessary that better railway facilities should be provided. This , the milk committee has. fully realised, and negotiations are tow proceeding with the Railway Department. The -.vhole matter has bees placed before the Department as a i commercial proposition, and the eomreittoe hopes that an improvement will be effected. It is proposed that instead of corning in haphazardly, as at present, the milk shall be brought into the city by night trains —one on either line. i This will mean that the work at the ecmral station ia Dixon Street will be dene at night. It is proposed that morning rtiilk will be ''retained on the farmjunder the very, best conditions, and will be sent to Wellington with the evening's milt.. The rtiilk from the farm* <Jo-c to Wellington will be brought into the city expeditiously by motor lorries.
