CATHEDRAL BELLS.
TO RING IN WELLINGTON. Among the charms of many of the Cities and towns of Belgium ana Northern France, which attracted visitors in jthe days 'before the war, were the beaujtiful peals of bells, which rang out from itheir cathedral belfries. Thero never Iwere such bells as those of Malines, for 'example; and their' destruction deeply stirfad all those people -who had ever listened to their musical responses to fche master hands that rang them. Wonderful and solemn and sweet are the Jones of true cathedral bells! Yet the people of Wellington have never heard fchem in their own city, never heard Jbcir own cathedral bells chiming with fc cheery, uplifting clamour or swinging Steadily to send . their deep notes jjniveiing across the waters and out Over the hills. Some day they will, though, and whether it be soon or Into, Will depend upon the support given to £he scheme, which is "now" well under way, to build on Anglican Cathedral in Wellington.'Throughout those wrecked areas of France and Flanders men will bo busy building and re-building their iionses of God which the Huns have Shattered. To the people of those lands £he idea of living without their beautiful buildings, and their wonderful bells, iwould be unthinkable. Individually these people are poorer than New Zealanders, yet they will rebuild their cathedrals as thankott'erings for peace, go that the reasons -why we in New Zealand should build a groat cathedral in Our capital city, as a tkankoSering Jqo, arc much more urgent and real; ffhey those wise folk who have suffered ivioia torments during the. past four ye>% they know that hfe vnthout tbin&' and thoughts that are beautiful, is a)crude and unsatisfying existence, w/ do nor iealise this because we have newi heard our eity's cathedral bells ringing overhead, or possessed a cathedral ot the kind that such bells would belong to. But the time is^coming when we shall, and you it by sab-. ' scribing to the cathedral building fund. Donations or-promises {which may hit spread over five years) will be we.corned, and should be sent,to the hon. i>rganiaing secretary, Eev. C F Askew, St.. SJaffc's Sisuage, JReßasgtoiu j>ufi-
