NEW YEAR'S DAY.
UNSEASONABLE WEATIIEK.
. The holiday ou New Year's Day wan [spoiled by the unseasonable wcalher. i.Steady Tain fell during the early part of the morning,iwhich made it appear 'hat all outdoor functions would have to abandoned. However, the rain ceased shortly before midday, and the nfteriuooat was bright and fine, though :t rather nasty wind blew. Despite the unfavourable conditions, a goodly_ number of people patronised the Otaki beach, and picnics were indulged in during the afternoon. Tennis and bowl* attracted a.good number of people also. New Yi-ht'* Eve'passed off quietly, on Hie whole. There were the usual number of bands of singers parading the town. Some of these were rather
,ioisy, and in a few instances Home slight damage was done by pSr-ons. but, on the whole, the young jK-opie were ivc-H-behavcd.
