Opunake Parliamentary Union.
The third sitting of the above was held on Wednesday evening, but there was rather a thin attendance owing to counter attractions. Mr Robinson, the Premier, being absent at Manaia, and Mr P. White, who was also appointed one of the Ministry, being absent at Otakeho, Mr Geo. W. Rogers, Minister of Lands, had to take charge of the debate, assisted by Mr Armstrong, Minister of Education. After a number of questions had been dealt with, the State Pensions Bill was introduced and debated, most of the speakers being adverse to the measure. As so many of those ■who intended speaking on the Bill were absent, progress was reported shortly after nine o’clock. Mr Rogers notified that Mr Goodacre, of New Plymouth, was anxious to attend the next sitting provided the Union would take up Prohibition as the subject for debate, and moved that the Standing Orders be suspended so as to meet him. The motion was carried on the voices, so that at the next sitting a Bill will be brought in to enable the subject to be debated, when we trust that a full muster of members will put in an appearance.
