SURF BATHING.
(to the editor.) Sib, —In your issue of Tuesday last, I noticed an effusion signed "Landsman," complaining of what the author somewhat pruriently imagined to be a nuisance—viz., bathing. As lam one of the individuals attacked, kindly permit me space to reply. "Landsman" ought to be glad that there are some few people in Opunake who do not have personal objections to the use of plain, unadulterated water, either externally or internally. He also appears ignorant of the fact that the Town Board passed a resolution limiting the hours of bathing to before 8 a.m., an hour at which I have usually returned from my dip. Resolutions on that subject •vidently possess no interest for "Landsman." From my own observations, I do not think many of our ladies are so prone to early rising as to have leisure to wander about the beach early in the morning. Even when seen from the top of the cliff, say two hundred yards away, the " human form divine " is not such a dreadful looking object. I must congratulate " Landsman " on his piercing eyesight, for I suppose he never compromised himself by venturing farther than the top of the cliff when lie saw such a demoralising scene as he refers to. As regards the sharks, IT thank him both for the caution and his satire, but surely no self-respecting shark would demean itself by eating anybody so depraved as to go in swimming without being dressed in the latest Newport fashion.—l am, &c, W. F. Robinson.
