Brass Band Concert.
The Brass Band gave a concert on New Year's Night in the Town Hall, when a large audience greeted the performance. The programme opened with a selection by the Brass Baud under the conductorship of Mr J. J.' Cummins, which was well received. Mr Breach followed with that grand old song "The Death of Nelson," to which he did full justice. An encore' was called for, but not responded to. Miss Isabel Prosser sang "Auld Eobin Gray" very sweetly and was loudly applauded. Mr J. 8 f ~ Knobbs, whose appearance was greeted with enthusiastic applause, sang " The Slave Chase " very spiritedly, and had to reappear to a very decided and unanimous recall, and repeated the last verse. The Opunake String Band played a selection from "Norma," which was Well .received. "Maggie Murphy's Home" was rendered by Miss Maud Des Forges in very good style for so young a performer. " Teaching McFadden to Dance " by Mr F. Des Forges, in character, brought down the house, and as an encore Mr Des Forges repeated the last verse. Miss Isabel Prosser sang a ballad very nicely. The String Band played a selection, " The British Isles," very spiritedly, which was well received by the audience. Mr Baikes rendered " Home, boys, Home," in first-class style, and received loud applause, and as an encore repeated the last verse. A selection by the Brass Band, which was very tastefully rendered, brought the concert to a close. The room was then cleared for dancing, which was kept up till early morn, Mr A. Good supplying the music in his usual capable and satisfactory manner. The proceeds will make a handsome addition to the funds of the Band, and the evident appreciation of their efforts should stimulate the members and cause a revival of interest in the Band. All these sort of institutions tend to liven up a town, and are deserving of support. -
