Concert and Dance at Awatuna.

(From a Correspondent.)

This entertainment, which had been postponed on account of the weather from the previous week, came off on Wednesday evening, when the hall was packed to its utmost capacity. A number of members qf the Opunake String Band came up, and gave three selections, which were very much appreciated, and made the subject of very favorable comment. Master W. Hutchens sang “Father’s Boat” very nicely. Mr E. C. Raikes gave “ The King’s Highway in good style. Duet, “ Whispering Hope,” Miss Grainger and Mrs Perrott; violin solo by Mr Gatenby was a good item ; quartette, “Oh who will o’er the Downs so Free,” Messrs Hutchens, Raikes, Ebbett, and W. Hutchens, was very well rendered ; song, “ Horae Boys Home,” Mr W. Oliver ; piano duet by Miss Hill and Mr Barrett was a very good item ; recitation by Mr H. Burgess ; Mr Johnson, who is possessed of a good voice, sang his item very pleasingly ; song, “ True till Death,” by Mrs Hutchens, was very effectively given. In the second part Mr Hutchens sang “ The Heart Bowed Down ” in a very finished manner. Mr Gatenby played a violin solo which brought down the house. Mr Lloyd was in capital voice, and had to answer a recall for his song, “ The Tar’s Farewell.” A novelty in the form of a whistling solo was then introduced by Mr Johnson, who is quite an artist in this line. The quartette, “ Basso Profundo,” was given by Messrs Watson and Perrott, and Mrs Perrott and Miss Grainger. Messrs Lloyd and Carter sang a duet, “ Albion,” in good time and tune. A song very well rendered by Mr Perrott brought the vocal items to an end.

A vote of thanks, on the motion of Mr Palmer, was passed to all those who had so kindly assisted in making the entertainment such a success. Dancing was then begun, and kept up spiritedly for several hours.
