Leu ion, September The naval engagement between the Japanese and Chinese off the Yalu River has been much discussed in England, and has stimulated fresh demands for’"an increase of the British navy. v Sixteen Chinese and nineteen Japanese ships wore engaged in the battle, besides a flotilla of torpedo boats.
The Japanese retired iu the evening, and, according to the account) received here were not pursued. The Chinese completed the landing of 6300 troops. The ISrilish Consul at Tientsin wires that the Japanese lost three warships. The Chinese saw nothing of the enemy till they reached the Yalu. Most of the troops had been landed before the battle. The Chen Yuen opened the fight. The Times correspondent at Tientsin confirms the sinking of some ships a.id -epovts that others are greatly damaged. ; The Japanese Legation are offieia'ly informed that the loss at the battle of Yalu. was 10 officers and 69 men killed, and 169 wounded., Tokio, September 23. The Japanese estimate, the Chinese losses n-ior to the Ping Yang and Yalu engagements at 8000, chiefly in small actions, the news of which was suppressed. The Chinese are pouring reinforcements into Mcukden in anticipation of-a Japanese attack, and the place is be' ig rapicV.y reinforced.
