AWATUNA.
(Our Own Correspondent.) Our new local store is now open, though not yet fully stocked. It is to be hoped that it will do well. I hear of four expresses that are going to run through from Elthain to Opunake as soon as it is possible to get through. I do not see very well how they can get through before the Punehu and Mangawhero bridges are constructed, and even then one will be quite enough. Success attend the first! Numerous cases of petty larceny are occurring about this district. If the sneak thieves are caught in their little nefarious practices Her Majesty will probably set bounds to their liberty for some little time. Bush camps seem to be their great attraction. There will be a good programme to open the Awaluna Hall. The ladies held a meeting, with Mrs Parkes as Chairwoman, to consider ways and means of providing provisions for the concert and dance. The tickets are being sold rapidly. During the recent awful thunderstorm a°treo. p^r the Mangawhero Road was completely shattered by lightning, huge splinters gf enormous weight being thrown fully half a chain away from the trunk. The lightning was very vivid, and some of the peals of thunder truly startling.
