TO THE EDITOR

Sir, —I have been asked by the Secretary of the Auckland Orphanages United Council, to convey the thanks of the Council to all who helped to make the recent appeal on behalf of the Orphanages such an outstanding success. The amount received, £39 6s 7d, was a record amount for Opotiki. Warm thanks arc therefore extended to all who contributed, and to the ladies and other good workers who actively participated. K. H. 'EVANS, * The Manse.

“THE QUESTION OF MOTOR CYCLES” Sir,—l hoped for some comments on my enquiry and I must thank Mosses. Anderson and Parkinson for their reasonable and balanced comments on the subejet. Also to “Fair Play” for- his not so reasonable and quite unbalanced comment. This correspondent evidently considers that ,! should not have dared to question any action by motor cyclists and has used the word malign. A nasty word with u nasty meaning and not in. the slightest degree applicable to any action by “Enquirer”, However even this comment, is not without its value. All the correspondents have revealed the true position regarding the motor cyclist and “Fair Play” has uncovered the “young hotheads”. “Fair Play” also considers I owe an apology to the club and if I have done any injustice I am only too willing to do so. However all that has resulted through my enquiry, I feel has been mo-re of a boost to the club’s cause. I hope the “young hotheads” revealed by “Fair Play” will take the hint and pull up their socks before “Enquirer” and those aho think likewise, become more vehement in their protests. “Enquirer” certainly does not intend to drop the .matter here regarding these “noisy pests”. “Fair Play” also tells us that the remedy for this nuisance is in the hands of the local traffic inspector. This being so, then may I make an appeal to the inspector to- “do his stuff”. Regarding the aeroplane about which “Fair Play” is so puzzled. Myreason for not mentioning this was because the occurence of the “terrific din” is rare, but- the “young hotheads” arc hero to stay. Let us then join hands in an appeal for quieter motor cycling. ENQUIRER.
