WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
WAIMANA-NUKUHOU - The December meeting, of the Waimana-N ukuhou Women’s Institute was held last Wednesday afternoon. The attendance of members was not as good as usual, Mrs.R. Looney presided land the “Ode to Friendship” opened the proceedings. Letters were read from the secretary of the Blind Institute Auckland, thanking members for the generous donation received and from overseas in recognition of food parcels received; - An interesting report -of the bi-annual council meeting was given by Mrs. B. White. A pleasant interlude in the programme was an exchance of Christmas gifts among members. Mrs. Hcdley of the Otara .Women’s Institute most capably demonstrated several ways of quilting, including shadow quilting, which proved most interesting. Miss Cranswick and Miss D‘. Hughes offered to help at the A. and P. Show in Whakatane. A committee was formed to arrange the schedule for the institute show to be held late in February. Mrs. G. Mitchell convened the entertainment for the meeting and Christmas carols were sung by several members, Miss Currie being soloist. The winners of the day’s competition were Best double flower: Mrs. H. Bell 1, Mrs. Whiteman 2, Mrs. Stevenson 3. Best single flower: Mrs. J. Boynton and Mrs. Stevenson (tie) 1, Mrs. 11. Bell- 3, Mrs. F. Bell and Miss Currie (tie) 4. Vase of roses: Mrs. F. Savage 1, Mrs, Hewitt 2, Mrs. F. Bell and Mrs. Stevenson (tie) 3. Best vegetable: Mrs. F. Bell 1, Mrs. Hewitt 2, Mrs. R. White 3. Lady’s slip: Mrs. Mannion 1, Mrs. F. Beil 2. At the conclusion of the meeting Mrs. Looney thanked Mrs. S. Abbot and Mrs. 0. Black for judging, also the hostesses. She wished all a Merry Christmas.
GARDEN CIRCLE MEETING The November meeting ol the Waimana-Nukuhc-u Women's Institute Gardening Circle was held at Mrs. M. King’s home. Mrs. Wyldc presided over an excellent attendance of members and also members of the Waiotahi Gardening Circle were present. On their arrival Mrs. E. B. Smith presented Mrs. King with a lovely bouquet- of roses. The usual business was dealt with and two new members, Mrs. Whiteman and Mrs. T. G. King, were velcomed. Mrs. G. Watson explained the making of a floral ball.
Games and competitions were held out of doors. Clock golf was won by Mis. R. Looney and the crazy croquet resulted in Mrs. L. Looney and Mrs. Allison tying. “Guessing animals” drawn by members, resulted in both gardening circles being equal. Members enjoyed a stroll aroundthe large garden which seemed to prove quite interesting to all.
The afternoon’s competitions were well entered for and results arc as follows: —
Best flower: Mrs. C. Hampton (lily) 1, Mrs. Hughes (peony rose) 2, Mrs. Hewitt (gerbera) 3. Best vegetable : Mrs. Hewitt, Mrs. R. White and. Mrs. G. .Mitchell (tie) 3, Mrs. Hampton 4. Vase of roses: Mrs. AY; 1 tic 1, Mrs. Hewitt-2, Mrs. C. Hampton 3. Jazz vase of flowers: Mrs. Hewitt ], Mrs. Looney 2, Airs. Wylde 3. ’At the conclusion of the afternoon, Mrs. Wylde thanked Mrs. King for the use of her home and garden, also the hostesses and judges. Mrs. Smith, on behalf of the visitors, expressed their appreciation at being able to attend the meeting.
