TO THE -EDITOR
CONCERNING MOTORCYCLES Sir,—l am afraid your correspondent ‘Enquirer 1 has apparently made no attempt to ascertain the true facts concerning motorcycles, the wastage of petrol, and creation of a noise nuisance within the precincts of the borough. With regard to the wastage of petrol it is generally acknowledged that this form o! motor transport is the most economical available for petrol consumption, most machines being capable of eighty miles or more to. the gallon. Our club holds a meeting every two weeks and on a run the total petrol consumed by all participating docs not exceed four gallons. Anyone passing a local beach during the last few weekends will see numbers of cars packer which no doubt any one of which used up much more petrol during the week than the combined total of the motorcycles.
All riders in our club have been issued with a current warrant of fitness, implying that their machines conform with the regulations for road worthiness and effective silencing. Further our club runs are usually held in the afternoon and invariably on » country road away from the built-up area; the exception beig Labour Day when the meeting was held in the borough.
The aim of the local club is to foster clean healthy sport among the younger motorcyclists of the district which .in our opinion we have succeeded in doing. This is something to be commended rather than condemned. a , I. J. S. PARKINSON, Club Captain, Tiki Motorcycle Club. Opotiki, 27th. November.
