DELIVERY OF FREIGHT
UNDUE; DELAY ALLEGED Recently three members of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce were delegated to make representations to N.Z. Railways concerning alleged late delivery of goods which was caused by the transfer of goods to smaller trucks’ instead of being delivered oil the larger vehicles. At the meeting of the Chamber last night, Mr. J. R, Dunlop, manager, explained that the position was that the two 6-whecler trucks were used on alternate days. There had been a lot of' complaints of breakages of goods on these large vehicles and so the department had decided to lit a canopy oil oiie of the large vehicles for these lines and to use the other largo vehicle for bulk lines such as petrol and wall boards. The goods were sorted out on the ramp and delivered on the smaller trucks. Au old service car in Rotorua was being converted for delivery.
Mr. East said that owing to reloading there had been delay. Mr. Dunlop said that that would bo rectified shortly. •Mr. Stott said that the larger trucks had only been used to go round the business area. Mr. Dunlop said that that had meant tying the large (rucks up all day on deliveries, Mr. C. Gordon asked if it would be possible to deliver in the country. The farmers would be willing to meet the extra cost. Mr. Dunlop replied that they were bound by a license and could not go out of (he borough. Mi. East said that private carriers had a license to. carry outside the borough and they would be up in arms if the Railway Department carried goods into the county. He considered that Read Services appeared to be doing their best. Private enterprise must be given a chance.
