WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

WAIMANA-NUKUHOU The monthly meeting of the AVai-mana-Nukuhou Women’s Institute was held last AA’cdncsday afternoon. There was a very good attendance ol members and also some from the AVaiotahi W.I. were also present and presented the programme for the meeting. The proceedings opened with the singing of the “Ode to Friendship”, and the “Aspirations” were, read by. Mrs. Hewitt. Mrs-. R. Looney welcomed membe and visitors. The minutes and correspondence- were dealt with. One new member, Mrs. laic, was wel-

comed. It- was decided to hold a drama and dance evening on the 13th. Mr.'Meal's of the Blind Institute, Auckland, gave a most interesting address on the Blind Institute and touched briefly on the workings of same. The speaker stated that life under blindness can have its purpose and meaning and service of education and occupation gives sustained interest. They, were also seeking to bring handcraft into the blind people’s homes. Mr. Meats also spoke of .Sunrise Home for the children. At the conclusion of his address a collection was taken up for Sunshine Home and the sum of £o 2s 9d was contributed. Donations were also made to the A.C'.AV.AA*. and leper appeal. The Waiotahi members then gave the following programme :

Mrs. Frazer demonstrated liiarketry and liad several vases and bowls on exhibition. Pianoforte solos were given by Mrs. Drury and iMrs. Frazer delighted the meeting with electric steel guitar items. Mm. Allison rendered two vocal items most delightfully and a guessing competition arranged by Mrs. L. Looney was won by Mrs. J. Mitchell. The day’s competitions were won. as follows Bowl of red, white and blue flowers ' for effect: Mrs. Hewitt- 1, Mrs. AA’oolfield and Mrs. Stevenson 2.
