HERD-TESTING

PERIOD ENDING SEPT. 29 I ollowing are some of the averages of the Bay of Plenty and East Coast Heard Improvement Association for the period ending September 29, 1947. In all there are now 28 groups in the Association Tolaga Bay-Whangara with 663 cows headed the group averages with 39 lbs. butterfat per cow. Whakatane was second noth 38 lbs. average. Galatea North, Omo-koroa-Te Puna, Thornton and Wairoa were third with 37 lbs. Other figures of local interest were: Awakeri 35 lbs. average, Edgecuinbe 35, Nukuhou 32, Opotiki 34, Otakiri 36, Taneatua 32, Waimana 35. The. Association average was 34 lbs. butterfat from the 32,96. cows tested.

Manutukc - Patuatahi - Hexton lead the herds of from 1 to 20 cows with 57 lbs butterfat- average. Next was Omokoroa-Tc Puna with 56 and To Karaka-Onnond with 51.

Herds of 21-50 cows were lead by a Paengaroa Jot of 34 cows the average figure being 54. Aongatoto and Omokoroa-Tc Puna herds averaged 52. Other herd averages in this grouping were: Awakeri 44, Edgecuinbe 42, Nukuhou 37, Opotiki 44, Otakiri 34, Taneatua 39, Thornton 43, Waimana 42, Whakatane 48.

A herd of 82 cows in the Thornton group topped the averages in the herds of from 51 to 100 cows, the figure being 52. Second place went to a Taneatua herd of 56 cows, 50 average. A herd of 65 cows in the Aongatoto group and another of 74 cows in the Edgecuinbe group secured the iigue of 49. Other averages were: Nukuhou 45, Opotiki 41, Thornton 46, Waimana 45, Whakatane 45.

108 Cows in the Awakeri group secured the best hard average 100 cows and over with the good figure of 50 lbs. butterfat. Next was-a Thornton herd of 153 cows with 45 and a Tolaga Bay-Whangara herd of 100 cows was only 1 lb. lower. An Edgceuuibc herd averaged 39, Opotiki 33, Otakiri 27, Taneatua 35. - -■: '■ - A - _ :..
