THEATRE STAFFING
XMAS DAY SCREENING A protest against the council’s decision to permit pictures to be screened on the evening of Christmas Day was received at the monthly ~of tile Gisborne Borough Council from the secretary of the Gisborne ". branch of the Auckland* Theatre Employees’ Union, states the Herald. The communication stated that theatre employees, on a vote being taken, were unwilling to work on Christmas Day, and that it was understood that only one other town and Gisborne' screened films last Christmas Day. Councillors agreed that there was nothing the council could do in the matter and it was pointed out that when permission was granted for the screening an undertaking had been given that the labour employed was on a purely voluntary basis. The council had merely given .its consent that an appropriate programme could be sccrcned 011 Christmas Day. Labour tor the staffing of the theatres was the concern of the respective managers.
