THE OPOTIKI NEWS Friday. December 22, 1939. CHRISTMAS 1939

To many nations, the Christmas of 1939 will have proved a. great disappointment. it. was hoped when the Armistice was signed in 1918, that the world would be Creed from another jmeh catastrophetie war, and that by the setting up of a League of Nations that nations with war ambitions could be securely dealt with. Events have shown that such a hope is only doomed to failure andi that nations are to be found in every age prepared to break the most solemn vows. The end of 1939 finds the world with the fear that unless, something happens that will enable unruly nations to be curbed, the, world will face disaster, with the. most stupendous destruction of property and lives. The lust for power is at the hack of the present everspreading conflict and only a return to sane reasoning will prevent even worse disaster. The world has forgotten the message of nearly two thousand years ago, ol goodwill toward all men. In the past the British Nation has made many mistakes, but to-day the peoples of this world-wide Empire are pfottdi of the high standard of the British Empire, which is again proving itself the greatest of all pres-ent-day nations and a protector of tin; weak. Britishers are proud of the humane way in which the British troops in every sphere of the war, are conducting themselves and thereby setting an example to others. Jt is the earnest hope of all that something may yet come about which "'ill bring an early termination of the present conflict and that Christmas of 1940 will indeed, be a happy one. It is with this wish that the Opotiki News wishes its readers a Merry Christinas and a Happy New Year.
