'J'he o.v, Otimai will load 1 at Auckland to-mor-row for Opotiki and is expected to arrive in Opotiki. on Thursday. Hay Wire. Wire, for tying haled hay is now unprocurable in Hawke’s Bay. One or two contractors have a supply sufficient to last this season. The. others ate'commencing this week to use light rope, about the thickness of a clothesline. One contractor stated that the rope had been tried out and was effective. He added that instead of having a lot of dangerous wire lying about the place next winter many farmers would have' lengths of rope which will serve a multitude of useful purposes. Consternation in Camp. , In a military camp in New Zealand a week or tw« ago consternation was caused by one of the sentries discharging his rifle in the early hours of the morning, turning out the entire guard at the gallop, most* of the officers and half of the men. At an inquiry next day it was learned that the sentry was pacing out Ins beat regularly and correctly, but that jv-riibb.it was sitting on a mound a short distance away enjoying the spectacle. 'I lie rabbit stayed there so long that it eventually got on the nerves of the sentry—a keen rabbit shooter in civilian life—and after about an hour ho raised his rifle and. shot, the rabbit through the head. Creasy Patch on Highway. The heavy rain .which fell during the week-end in the Allatawai distric t made a section of road on Tralford’s Hill greasy and difficult to negotiate, resulting in delays in the mails. At a point six mile.s north of Matawaj on the Gishornc-Auckland •State highway the rain softened the clay, at a deviation and the crossing of that section presented a problem .for through traffic. Despite the work that is being carried out, the trouble at that point is negligible in fine weather, and it is expected that the roadl will bo had: to normal scon. Whiie Butterfly. . Whether it is partly due to the weather conditions or parasites is uncertain. hut Opotiki residents have noticed with satisfaction, a great diminution in tlit‘ numbers of white butterflies in the district this season. Only a few of the butterflies arc to he seen in fields and gardens and even where there is a large area under cabbages and cauliflowers, only occasional butterflies are observed. Reports from other district are of a similar nature. In previous years white butterflies have been abroad in their thousands in Hawke’s .May at this time of the year, hut only oddl butterflies have been noticed to date.
