MONTHLY MEETING \ Gil. C. D. BROWN F AREWJfiLLED TO liEIAVE FOR, GAMP The monthly meeting of the Opotiki Borough Council was liold in tlic Borough Chambers last night. Present: The Mayor (Air .C. K: Moody), Councillors G. Jj. Day, T. G. Johnson, S. FI .Webb, F. J. Short, A. G. Stevenson, C. -D. Brown, W. H • Briggs (town clerk). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed and outward correspondence approved. Accounts were passed for payment as follows:—General Account £6IG-.lls 9d, Wharf Account £3l 10s 4d, Domain Board Account, £8 Is 4d. Bank balance were shown as follows: —District f und (dr.) £723 10s 9d, Wharf Account (cr.) £l5B 11,s Od, Domain Board Account (cr.) £24 Os 9d. Inward Correspondence Centennial Celebrations. —-i he secretary of the Opotiki Centennial Committee wrote in connection with the postponement of the Centennial celebrations in Opotiki and asked! lor a donation to assi t in paying off the small liability already incurred.—The matter was deferred until sth. Decern her when it is hoped that a detailed statement of the committee’s finances will he available. Sealing Preparations. —The Shell Co. wrote stating that no road oil was available as st.oclks had become exhausted and would be again available until January, when there would also be an iincrease in price. The council decided to make (inquiries from other sources. Domain Accounts.—The Domain Board statement was received back from the Audit Department.—lt was decided to reply, stating that the council had noted the exceptions. • Waterworks Reserve. —A copy of the plan of the new reserve at the waterworks catchment area was received from the Department. Stall.—A request from the local S.A. Corps lor permission t,o vise the hand rotunda for a sale ol work was gianted. Sub-divisions. —Four sub-divisions of properties, including the arca.s lor the State houses, were approved by council. Fire Plugs.—The secretary of the Opotiki Fire Board wrote drawing attention to the unsatisfactory condition of the fire plugs, and also referred to a. heap of rubbish at the rear .of premises in Church Street.—Or. Short said the efficiency of the fire brigade depended on the state of the equipment in the water system. There could be considerable delay in being able to turn oiu the water, he stated. The council decidled to put concrete around the plugs. It was stated that the rubbish referred, to had. been returned some time ago.
The works report was approved, it was deeiiled to lay the footpath hi Bridge Street, in concrete. Gravel Wanted.—The Opotiki Citizens Bowling Club requested that gravel should be put on the roadside in front of the bowling green, owing to ears parked on the road having difficulty in pulling off.—-The request was granted. Street Grazing.—lt was stated that during the refcent illness of the traffic inspector, mobs of 'cattle had been allowed to graze for hours on the borough. streets by drovers. —T he council decided to prosecute future offendeis. Health.—The report of the district health inspector, Mr. Wall work, was a pprovedl. Separate Committees Again in accordance with previous notice given, Cr. Short- moved that.the council revert to seperate committees as previously. The mover said the gonoial purposes committee had been given a trial and had failed. Although the committee system was not altogether satisfactory it was the best system. Under the general purposes committee there were occasions when only three councillors were present. The motion was seconded by Cr. Johnson who said he would not attend meetings of a- general purposes committee when only a few turned up. The motion was carried, only Cr. Day dissenting. Cr. Short moved that the personnel of the committees be the same as previously. Seconded by Or. Johnson and carried. Departure of councillor Cr. Short referred to the impending departure of Cr. Brown, who had offered his services to his country, and on behalf of the council he congratulated Oapt. Brown on the step he had taken and wished him the best of
luedc. The council dteeided on the motion of Cr. Short to grant Cr. Broun extended leave ol absence. Cr. Day also expressed his good wishes to t r. Brown, while the mayor informed Cl*. Brawn that, the people of Opotiki would he glad to welcome Capt. Blown back to Opotiki. Cr. Brown had been a good councillor, his Worship sank Cr. Johnson said he believed! that Captain Brown would soon be a major. He would like to thank/Cr. Brown, for the good work he had done lor tile Opotiki Territorials. -Cr. Brown briefly replied, thanking, councillors for their co-operation luring liis term as a councillor. He said that he would bo pleased to welcome any councillor to -whu ie\oi enn.p he was sent.
General Business Or. Webb referred to the need of a light on the new portion of the Opotiki wharf and said that work was being carried on under difficulties. — Ihe council decided* to instal the light as suggested. In view of the- holiday period, the council decided to hold the next mooting of the council on December 19.
