The. value of athletics lia 8 never been brought home so convincingly as at the present time, and the Opetiki Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club is striving in every way to encourage the young people of the district- to take up this healthy sport-. Already several of the most prominent competitors have gone to camp and every endeavour be made by tho young people to fill these gaps and increase the strength, of the club. Another excellent programme lias been- arranged for to-nigbt’s meeting -and it is to.be hoped that competitors {ind spectators a ike will turn out to help to make the night the “best yet-’.’. The.- inclusion of a shot putt oil. the prograihme should prove very popular, especially, among the older .sports. The senior high jump looks full of promise and -should bo the highlight of the programme. Field events should’ reach “great heights” this season; The standard of the junior events this season is very high and som(j T of the young men should gain laurels later on in the season. It is to he hoped that a few more cyclists will be on hand to-night. There is no doubt about the popularity of cycle events with the spectators. Those giving it a “pop” will enjoy themselves and encourage others to keep up these popular races. Since the opening night, the club has lost- two valuable competitors in Messrs. Peter Vokes and Maui Dclamcre, both having entered military camp. They have gene with the best wishes of Opotiki sports’ people. . Messrs. Parkinson Bros’, public address system added to the attractive.ness of the opening meeting and it is to be hoped that they will again be in. attendance to-night. Their amplifying system lias contributed in no .snlall measure to the success of athletics in Opotiki. - Mr. Ivan Parkinson lias been elected as a. steward! to the Athletic Club.
