ENDEAVOUR WINS RACE MANY CASUALTIES Ten yachts faced the starter in the race oil tire Opotiki river on Monday and presented a very pleasing sight. Opar, .Endeavour, L’Oiseau and Venice started on scratch, Flying .Cloud, Pope, Phantom (•!•} mins.), Q.T. (5 mins.), Marie (7| mins.) and Karoro (15 .mins.) being the other starters. The race commenced at 2 p.m. in a fresh north-west breeze, Opar crossing, the line first with Endeavour close behind. Then came Popeyc and the remainder bunched together. After rounding tlie first buoy, Opar smashed her tiller and retired... Another casualty occurred near the; buoy at the bar, where Popeye had the misfortune to carry away the mast- housing, also having to. retire. through hitting a buoy Marie was disqualified, and Flying Cloud met a similar fate when she hit Marie. The finishing times were:— J'jiuleavour 3 hours 19 mins. Phantom 3 hours 27* mills. , Flying Cloud 3 hours 30f mins. Marie 3 hours mins. Q.T. ,3 hours 40 ; \ mins. L’Oiseau 3 hours 52* mins.Readers will note that these were not the actual length of time that the race took to complete but the time o’clock that the boats completed the race. During the evening the programme for the season was drawn up. The chairman (Mr. R.
