HERD-TESTING

DISTRICT FIGURES Nearly 20,000’ cows were tested by the Bay of Plenty and. East Coast Herd Improvement ’Association during the period ended October- 4. There arei 22 groups under the association’s control the district extending from Katikati to Wairoa. There are four groups in the Gisborne district, two on the Coast and one in Wairoa, the total number of cows south ol; Opotiki being nearly 3000. 'The association’s average butterfat production for the period from 19,831 cows avus 291 b. of butterfat with a 4.'2 test. Only one of the Gisborne groups fell below this average, jvhile the Manutuke group reached 371 b.. One of the Coast and the onlj: AVairoa groups were hardly ux> to the average. The Gisborne district bad the honour of- having the highest herd' in , the association, this herd, in the AA 7aipaoa group, averaging 521 b., although only four cows were tested. However, the same group had the next best fig- „ ure, a herd with 21 cows tested averaging ’49lb. of fat per cow, a, figure which equalled the performance of a. AYhakatane herd of 35.
