OPOTIKI COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY 'MEETING The monthly meeting of the Opotiki County Council "was held! in the county ’chambers on Friday. Present: Mr. W. A. Girult (chairman), Councillors C. W. Fair-weather, R. A. Medley, A. E. Blake, S. Maxwell, J..T. Clark, T. Burke, C. Black, W. A. Butler, G. SMoody', and Mr. J.» T. .-Merry, (county clerk), and Mr. W. W. Upton, (county engineer). The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed' and outward correspondence'' f approvod. Inward Correspondence. Mr. L. ;A. Davies, acting secretary of the Opotiki War Vigilance Association, wrote asking that a representative of the. council la* appointed to the association. Councillors expressed the opinion that, political organisations should not be represented on. the association. The chairman was appointed! as. the council’s'representative.

A circular letter from Mr. W. E. Minister of Internal Affairs, dealt with tlie setting up of an emergency' organisation. The .chairman suggested that the v .yigilaneo’ Committee would servp ijtlie purpose. Mr. Merry said that Government regulations would conflict with the ideas of the committee, and the funds would bo centralised. It was to appoint a • sub-committee, to go into tho matter with the Borough Council. Crs. Black, Clark, and Butler were appointed. A letter from the Borough Council on the saine subject was received.

The Native Department wrote concerning revaluation of native lands oil the Coast. Mr. Merry said that tlie Department gave an understanding that the natives would be expected to fiay the rates. Mr. Merry said the results so far have been very encotirag-

Scott- wrote asking for tho grader to be put on bis road.—Left to

the engineer. Air. F. Amoamo made a similar request, offering to pay for the grader and-supply men. Agreed to. on condition that conditions be.complied with. The Department of Agriculture stated that grants for , noxious weed worji were made and the, council’s grant was £392. The State Fire insurance Department'wrote enclosing memorandum for signing. Tile Transport * .Dopaiiment wrote statiujr that, it- was now required to exercise control over certain vehicles , which were originally under the control of the Council, including taxis.
