RECREATION WEEK.
b(ic final day to-morrow -
The Opotiki activities in connection witli ‘ ‘Recreation Week” will he brought to a- conclusion to-morrmv when there will he a big sports and recreation clay at the reserve and in the evening- a grand finale dance will be held.
A varied and interesting programme has been arranged at the reserve and the various events should! be most hxciting to both the competitors' and spectators. The sjcven-a-side toot ballmatches alone will be well worth going to see. as these games are always fast from the kick-off to the final whistle. It- will be interesting to see how the Rugby. Union. committee team fares after its bold challenge to play any other committee. It is believed the Cricket Association has accepted the union’s challenge and it- is keen to. show that it- knows a little about Rugby as well as wielding the bat.
The short basketball -matches will also provide plenty of thrills. Several strong teams will be taking part and the games are sure t-<> be fast and snappy, as the girls will be fit after playing all the winter. ~
Jn addition to the basketball matches 7 teams will take part- in overheat! and tunnel ball games. These games are always spectacular and full of interest.
. A relay race organised by the Athletic Club will be another means of demonstrating physical fitness. Four tea ins will take, part and the race will he the whole length of the football field. A short-, physical drill display by the school children, which was so appreciated when performed during “Fitness Week”, will he given at the commencement of the programme. A real innovation will be an exhibition of baseball by two teams under the managership of Mr. Farron, of Omaramutu School. The public will be anxious to see how this exciting game is played, especially as it has proved so popular in the big centres. A short exhibition of boxing will be given by two of the best local exponents. .
It is hoped that- a large crowd will atend' to witness the various displays and so give encouragement to sport and recreation generally. The committee is very pleased with tlie result of its efforts to date and it is sure the interest and support of the public will be well maintained until the end of the week. The whole clay’s activities are well worthy of support, if only from a patriotic point of view, as the proceeds from both the sports and dance in the evening are being donated! to patriotic funds.
