A parsnip, one of a bunch purchased by an' hotel at Port Chalmers the eitherjtla.v, proved to he more valuable tjban was expected. ’When the cook was scraping the vegetable .she discovered .so?ne- foreign body embedded in the centre of the parsnip, and a closer investigation brought to light a 1937 shilling, still as new and bright, as the day it. was minted. Apparently the shilling had been dropped in the garden and had been gradually absorhedl by the vegetable, to he hidden until it was being prepared for the table.
