PICTURES ON CHRISTMAS' NIGHT COUNCIL DECLINES , BKQIJEST The monthly tiihoting of the Opotiki Borough Council was held on Wednesday' night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. S ; . Mooel.v), Councillors G. L. Day, TV G. Johnson, S. IC. Webb; F. J. Short, A-. *G. Stevenson, Mr. W. H. Briggs (town clerk). 'The .minutes., of the previous meeting were read and confirmed: Accounts were passed for payment as follows District 1 Fundi Account, £3.10 10s "d; Wharf Account, £29 19s,yd; Domain Board Account, 8s 10d. Bank balances were shown as follows: District Fund Account, 1 £2109 10s (jd (dr.); Wharf Account, £4.7 os lid (cr.); Domain Board £ld 2s lid (cr.).. Outward correspondence was read and approved andl inward correspond--ence dealt with as follows: , . Street Loan.—The Local 'Bodies’ Loans Board wrote stating that at a meeting yf the hoard', the council’s application for an extension of the peri fid' of the suggested loan had been duly considered and the board bad been unable to agree to an extension of the period.—Received.

Contribution.- —The W.Ub.A. wrote a long'letter putting forth the aims and objects of the association and asking (lie council for a contribution.—The council decided to reply that while it was in sympathy with the movement, Vt was not in a. position to assist. Councillors ox-pressodi the opinion that such a body should be'self-,supporting. Taxi Fares.—The Opotiki Comity Council wrote in connection with the charges for taxi,'fares'and asked the council to appoint representatives to meet county representatives to deal wit'li the matter so that fares could he fixed for the town and country.—On the motion of Cr. Johnson, the Mayor, and Councillors Short and Stevenson weio appointed borough representatives. ’

Xmas Pictures.—A request for permission ’ to screen pictures on the night of .Christmas Day was received from Opotiki Theatres Ltd.—ln moving that the request- be not- granted, .Cr. Day said that it. was only commercialising Christmas Day. The motion was seconded In- Or. Stevenson.

Ail amendment that -permission' bo granted was moved by Or. Johnson, but was ruled out ol order as being a direct negative. Cr. Johnson said that people would not go to pictures on Christinas Day unless they wanted to. It was a day of -rejoicing and there was no harm in it. However he was definitely opposed to pictures on Anzac Day and Good Frida v. .

Cr. Webb spoke in support of the application.

Cr. -Short saidl the principle appeared to be wrong to him. Other businesses were forced to close down on Christmas Dqy and lie did not see why another business should he allowed to open. On the motion being put, the -Mayor and Crs. Stevenson. Short and Day voted for itv and Crs. Johnson and Webb against. _ ;**' Addition to Reserve. —The Department wrote stating that -were the council prepared to pay £3 19s for tlie cost of the plans being prepared, the reserve ef 65 acres at the water catchment area would be Gazetted. Agreed.

Sports Reserve.—ln forwarding a cheque for £l2 Os 8d in payment for use of the sports reserve, the Opotiki Rugby‘Union thanked the council for the splendid way in which the reserve had been attended to. Thanks.—Mr. \Y. N. Rowe, secretary of the Hikutaia Domain Beard, wrote thanking the council for donation to the funds.

Opotiki Band.—Mr. T. J. Balmer wrote in connection with band matters. A long discussion took place in connection with ownership of band instruments. CV. Short said the council’s attitude slu'mld ho one of encouragement to those trying to put the bail'd in a good footing. It was finally agreed that the Mayor and C’rs. Short ami Stevenson meet. Mr. Palmer and discuss the oosition of the hand, with

power t<> act. Sealing Work.—flic Department of Labour wrote in connection with the proposed street scaling werk mult ktat-i cd that no subsidised labour would- be available.

War Vigilance Committee. —Mr. I . Davies wrote re the appointment of a' representative" on the Opotiki \\ ai Vigilance Committee. The Mayor was

appointed as the borough representative.

Emergency Organisation.-— I ’The Government wrote in connection with* the formation of an emergency organisation.—The council' decided to wait until the County Council had gone into the matter.

Section.—Mr. A. G. Hultquist wrote stating that the Minister in Charge of the Police Department had refused, to consider the borough council taking, over portion of a section, at the rear of the councils’ joint section in Church Street.

Tenders.—Tenders for "two sections were received from a number of residents. The highest tender (£6) was. accepted for a/ section at the otarsibridge. -Another section at the corner of Bridge ami Nelson streets also went to the highest tender (£9). Petrol Dump.—An application .'from Mr. B. Skelton for permission to-erect \ a pet-fol dump in Church Street was granted. h . Water Extension.—The question... of " the extension of the water supply to residences on the north-westernysicle ef • . the Wiyoeka bridge was briefly discussed. It was stated that a. proposition had been put up to the residents some time ago hut nothing had been done by them in the - matter. . Slipway.—After- a brief discussion ii,was decided that- Cr. Webb r< sliqjhkl lie in charge ok the borough slipway. Reports.—-TJio foreman’s report was approved.. The borough inspector reported that 4 horses, a herd of 12 cows, and another herd of two .steers and four cows had been impounded. Tin. sanitary in-pectoa' reported that there had- .been no cases of infectious diseases.
