ARRANGEMENTS IN HAND I) LSPOSALi OF F L NDS A special meeting of the Opotiki Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee was held in the Borough Chambers on Friday night:— • Present; Mrs. Potts, Messrs. A. S. cte Montalk (in the chair), W. Burrett, W. A. Gault, G. S. Moody, T. Hickey, A. G. Stevenson, C : . Tabb and G. W. Button (lion. secretary and treasurer). The minutes of the previous meeting were readt and confirmed. • Apologies for absence were received from Mrs. Hampton, Messrs. C. Morris and F. J, Short.

Inward and outward correspondence was approved. The secretary presented a financial statement showing a credit balance of £‘l2 11s 41d. It was resolved that the statement be received. "

Mr. de Montalk stated that- the main business of the meeting was to discuss "“Ilecreation Week”, which is to be held from September 29tli. to October 7th.

Corrospondience was read from the National Council in Wellington dealing with arrangements lor “Reeroation Week”. In contrast to the “1 it-ne-s Week”, held last February, when in most cases the activities were designed to draw the attention to physical welkin* by special -parade* and demonstration, tiiis “’Recreation "Week” is intended to stress the cultural lorces in "the community. The programme h r the week will contain not only outdoor and indoor sports, but recreational at-

tivities silt'll as music-, dramatics and hobby shows. Tly* emphasis cm “Recreation” in this week, as compared with fitness week, will show the twosided nature of the Physical Welfare and Recreation Movement. Considerable discussion took place as to what arrangements the committee should make for “Recreation Week”. The committee was of the opinion that in view of the difficult times, any efforts that- ware made for the week .should'he in aid of patriotic purposes. It was moved by Mr. Stevenson and seconded by Air. Moody, that the committee- get in touch with the various sports and recreational bodies, requesting them to - organise functions for furthering “Rccroatiqp Week . and that the Minister of Internal Affairs he advised that it was the committee's desire* that the funds raised -during the week bo. devoted to patriotic purposes, such as the committee thinks fit. The motion was carried unanimously. " - ■ ft was decided that a concert and cc.umiinitv siit££ he* held during the weak and that the Choral Society, Orphans’ Club and Schoo-l be asked to assist.* Arrangements for the concert andi community sing were left in the hands of .Messrs, de Montalk. Stevenson and Button. It was decided that the Maoris be a-ke'd to give a concert. Air. Burrett iva> appointed to make, the necessary ai rangoments. On Saturday. October 7th. ; there wi; 1 he* a “Field Day” at the reserve, w n there will he short football matches, basketball, athletic' sports and other outdoor games. In the ev--c ing there will be a big recreation .dance. On the final day. Saturday. October 7. all participants in the outdoor rts will form a procession and l march to the* reserve led by a- hand. . The* committee hopes that the local ,s ; arts and recreational organisations iv”l co-operate and assist in making this special week a success. The various functions are well worthy of support. in view of the well-deserving cause to which the funds are being devoted.
