RAILWAY AND ROAD
MEETING AT WAIMANA REQUEST EUR HIGHWAY SEALING A meeting .was held at Waimaua on Wednesday last in the Waimana Hull for the purpose of discussing the proposed State highway from Whakatane to Opotiki. The meeting ivas very well attended and after a full discussion, the following resolution was;‘carried unaniomuslv:— That this meeting of ratepayers of Waimana and Nukuhou consider the best interests*of the district would be served by the sealing of the existing highway, from the railhead at Taneatua to Opotiki and urges upon the Government the necessity of com-ment-in g the work at the earliest -possible opportunity.
■Copies 'of the resolution are being sent 10, the district member (,-Mr. A. G. Huitquist), and the Acting Prime .Minister. The secretary of the meeting (Mt - . Robert F. Wardhuv), was also asked tot forward the resolution to the Whakatane and Opotiki Press. .
EH E RAILWAY SURVEY NOW NEARLY COMPLETE GORGE ROAD BEING WIDENED iws?.sa (.From a Correspondent.) A well-attended meeting of the Waimana residents took place in the Waimana Picture Theatre on Wednesday evening, for the purpose of discussing the question of getting the Government to give Waimana roads the same consideration as is being shown to roads in other districts. A resolution was passed asking that the road from the railhead at Tunoatun to Opotiki be completed and tar-sealed as scon as possible.
This section of the road is now part of the major Main. Highway between Opotiki and Rotorua and carries most oi the tourist and other traffic which goes through the Hay oi Llenty and is the outlet for several large dairying settlements.
It is expected that Hie railway survey route, which was. started: about 15 years ago, will be finished in about a month and the head of the engineering stall from Wellington will arrive shortly for the final inspection, after 'which the-work of construction is expected to start- from Taneatua on 7 wards towards Opotiki. it lias been found that no long tunnels will be required, but there will be a few of twelve chains or so in the Waimana o-orge before the line comes out on Hie
Waimana and Nukuhou plains. The Main Highways Board lias now men at work widening the corners on that part of , the -Main Highway' between Taneatua and Waimana and in a few months’ .time this road will cease to bei a “one way road” and motorists will lie able to enjoy the scenery on the reserves while they drive.
