' ’ . -*: : ’ Temperatures. p North Island temperatures on 9 a. m. on Saturday were fairly mild, Auckland’s being''the lowest at 49 degrees and Gisborne ranking with Cape Maria van Diemen in the top row, with 55 degrees. Rugby Curtain-Raiser. The curtain-raiser to the big representative match played on Saturday 'afternoon at Opotiki. was between the Whakatane and Opotiki third grade represented lives. 'The Opotiki side had a rather easy win, the final score 'being.: Opotiki 24, Whakatane 0. Opotiki Band Re-formed. A meeting was'held on Friday night in the band-room, for the purpose of considering the re-forming of the Opotiki. Band. Mr. T. Palmer was unanimously elected hand-master. No committee was formed as those present considered it best to- hold another meeting on Friday, next, Ist. September, when a number of prospective players will he present and it was desired they should have a voice in the election of a committee. Opotiki Seniors Beaten. A senior team representing the Opotiki Union, visited Whatatutu on Saturday and played the Waikohu representatives. The game resulted in a win for the Waikohu fifteen by 19 points to 17. 'The refereeing did 1 not meet with the approval of Opotiki supporters, some (]l the decisions of the referee being very hard to understand. N. Sheeran, the Opotiki junior repiesentative. was a member of the Opotiki side and gave a very good account of himself, securing a good share of the Opotiki points. A bright .Rugby future is predicted for this player. R£in and Hail, Heavy rain accompanied by hail showers, passed over a narrow licit of the district yesterday afternoon. The rair. was mainly confined to the coast. A peculiar feature of the rain was that a tract of country only about a mile and a-half from the borough entirely escaped the heavy rain, while further inland again another narrow hell received a drenching. The rain lasted for most of the mid-afternoon in the borough. where nearly half an inch was recorded. The hail was oniy light jn the borough blit at Woodlands, and in other places it was heavy. Very little rain fell at Waiotaln, while residents who were visiting Olihva state that no rain fell there nine about four o’clock, Thu Match of the Season. Tlie .Rugby match for the Hurinui Apauui Memorial Shield to he played between Opotiki (holders) and Rangitaiki (challengers) is expected to easily draw the biggest crowd of the season to tlie reserve on Saturday. The style of play of the Rangitaiki team has always pleased Opotiki enthusiasts and the challengers have always attracted a good gate. The teams should he fairly evenly matched. In the first game of the season, a rather weak Opotiki side was beaten by Whakatane. Since that game the full Opotiki team has been unbeaten and local supporters expect the shield to remain in Opotiki. The Knugitniki side has suffered defeats this year and will find themselves up against a fast and very lit team in the Opotiki side. A pleasing feature of Rugby in the Bay this season has been the high standard of play, and on the form shown, there lias been very little to choose between the represen tat i vets of Tauranga . Rotorua, ...Rangitaiki, Whakatane anil Opotiki sub-unions. A big crowd of Rugby enthusiasts will he- coming to Opotiki from Rangitaiki and Whakatane to see the final shield match of the season.
