GOODS FROM JAPAN
MADE UP JN ENGLAND STEADY INCREASE LONDON, July 4.—The value of manufactured goods from Japan has steadily fallen during the past three years, as a result, it is believed, mainly of a refusal by the jniblic to buy Japanese goods. At the same time, however, the value of “raw material” from which British goods are made has increased. The position is illustrated by ligures provided at the Board of Trade. The total value eff articles of wearing apparel imported from Japan during the first quarter of this year fell to £206,000, compared with £421,000 last year. On the other hand), the imports of material from which'these articles could he made as “Briti.sh” increased. The value of silk and artificial silk material from Japan rose from £346,000 in the lirst quarter of this year. To other countries as well thousands of pounds worth of Japanese materials is being sent to’ he made up and imported here as other than Japanese .deeds. '"m “Thousands of so-called Britishimade silk stockings and articles of underwear are actually made in Japan, sent here as material, and run together by cheap girl labour in British factories,” a representative of a wholesale firm of silk stocking merchants stated. ,?
