The other road could, bo a state highway if the authorities liked to put. it through. Other councillors spoke in favour of this, C : r. Black stating that tlm Taneatua road would be the shortest fur through traffic. Cr. Burke said lie thought the Wailiui. road should be put through to take in ‘Whakatane. Cr. Black said that what was wanted was a tar-sealed road to the railland. The matter must he looked at from a business point of view—not a tourist one. Air. Merry said that they must deal, with the existing point of view, tlmother state highway could come later if necessary. Cr. Maxwell said the reason of thepublic .meeting was to get public opinion. Cr. Black said the chairman must give the council’s views. Cr. Neilson said that the road mustrun to the railhead. Air. Alerry said the council would liavA to find portion of the cost of tinmain highway. Air. Maxwell moved that the council request that the State highway between Taneatua and Opotiki he tarsealed. .Seconded by Cr. Neilson and carried. Concerning the railway, Air. Gaultsaid he could not see that much work could he dene with only £SOOO. ’lhe council was only asking when it wasgoing to be started.
