SNOW ON THE RANGES
HTjA ViY FALL AT MOTU OPOTIKI HILLS SPRINKLED Tin* ranges between Opotiki and Gisborne received a fair springlihg of snow <m Monday and in the morning some of the hills to the south of the borough could he seen with a fair coating of snow. The falls up the Fast Coast were fairly extensive and snow was falling at To Kalia, this being a unique experience for this part of the coast. On Tuesday afternoon there was a light sprinkling on most of the hills near Opotiki while some residents reported Inn ing seem snow flakes near the borough. The worst of the storm was reported! to be in the Alotu area, but the village itself escaped rather lightly. Seven or eight miles south of tins township the fall was as deep as Bin. The snow was accompanied by a heavy wind, the stress on the snowweighted branches of trees proving too much for many of them, and throughout the period large numbers ol branches cracked under, the weight. Very little snow fell near Gisborne Init several heavy falls took place at various places up the coast on the Gisborne side of the range. As in previous storms, some places escaped entirely from the snow, while nearbe areas were thickly coated. There is little indication yet that the weather is showing any definite improvement, and unsettled! conditions are still fairly general.
