Shipping. The m.v. Waiotahi is due to arrive in Opotiki- to-morrow morning, and will leave for Auckland on Saturday morning. North island Temperatures. North Island temperatures at 9 a.m. .were: Auckland 49 degrees, Tauranga 40, Opotiki 42, East- Cape .4"J, and Gisborne, Napier and Wellington 41. Labour Meeting. A-general meeting of the Labour Party will be hold in the Labour social rooms on Friday night, commencing at 7.30 p.m. Whckatane’s Recruiting Response. According to the latest figures the number of Territorials in the Whakatane area is well ahead of the Opotiki figures. The response in Whakatane has been very good, but recruits in Opotiki are coming forward very slowly. Air Passengers. Passengers by I’nioti Airways’ plane between Auckland and Gisborne included tlie- following:—.Monday: -Mr. j,. Mandeno, from Auckland to Opotiki. Yesterday: Mr. Lf. A. Torrens. Gisborne to Opotiki j -Mr. .Mottram. Opotiki to Auckland. Talented Visitor. A noted visiter to Opotiki to-day was Mr. Paul Sehram. the world-fam-ous pianiste. who is conducting a tom of New Zealand. The- senior “pupils of the Opotiki District High School were fortunate in hearing a number ot selections played by the talented visitor.

'*The East Coast districts again escaped the very severe conditions which prevailed in neighbouring areas. and only a light powdering ,oi : snow fell in the high country in Poverty .Bay on Monday and yesterday. No snow has yet fallen on the Opotiki side of the range directly south of the borough. To Correspondents. We wish to remind writers of letters to the News that letters must Ik- written with ample space beween the lines and. not so cramped up as to he almost unreadable. Wo recently received a letter which had to he typed out and carefully checked over, about an hour’s time being wasted in the process. In future such letters will find their way into the waste-pap-er basket.
Sign-posting Coast Road. The long: task of sign-posting the East Coast main highway between Cape Kwnaway and Opotiki will In* completed this month, it is hoped, the resident A.A. patrol having made arrangements to visit the section now remaining to he posted on July 24. There are several open wat-er-courses not yet indicated by warning signs and as some ol these are coneaaledi from approaching motorists. the signs to he erected will serve :i mo,st useful purpose. A Cold Snap. Conditions in Opotiki towards nightfall yesterday became decidedly chillv and light hail fell for some time in the northern part of the borough. The storm clouds cleared! away later and the night was a very cold one. The countryside was cov-e-red with a white mantle of heavy frost this morning. On one Opotiki farm only four miles from the borough two thermometers registered as low as IB degrees on the grass, while tie air temperatures was only 22 degrees. A tractor on the farm was so cold that when the steel wheels wore touched with gloved hands, the gloves immediately froze- to the wheels, while drops of water on the bonnet of a truck which had been covered with several sacks, wentfound to lie- frozen.
