Shipping. The m.v. Waiotahi was again unable to enter the Opotiki Jmrbour this liiorniiig. A heavy sea is still running in the Bay o/f Plenty. If conditions are favourable the Waiotahi will arrive in Opotiki to-morrow. Temperatures. North Island temperatures at & o’clock yesterday morning were as follows: Auckland and Tauranga 56 degrees.. Opotiki 50, *East Cape 54, Gisborne 55, Napier 57„ and' Wellington 53. Correction., In the report of the happenings in Kelly Street, appearing in Wednesday’s issue of the News, it was stated that an admission of theft had been made by the man concerned. Although such an admission was made it has subsequently been ascertained by the police that the rifle \yas loaned'by the youth and not stolen. Wonderful Safety Record. In striking contrast to the. position in New Zealand cities, in connection with motor fatalities, a wonderful record has been shown in the city of Winnipeg, Canada, which lias a population approximately that of Auckland. A copy of the Winnipeg Tribune received by an Opotiki resident features the fact that the city had been without a traffic fatality for 169 days and the safety flags were still hying, with the hope that the record wouldi exceed a period of six moiiths. Gisborne Dairy Season. Prospects in the* Gisborne district appear good for the coming dairy season. As a result of the season last year being such a poor one, m,ost of the cows were dried off early and with a Jong spell stock should come into production in good condition. The pastures have made a w,underfill recovery, following the breaking of the drought, and the growth is still continuing. The secretary of the Kia Ora Dairy Co. reports that many more cows will be .brought into production this season. Centennial Contributions. ' A good response has already been made as the result of the appeal for funds at Gisborne in connection with the Centennial celebrations in Gisborne. Contributions include the following: Gisborne Borough Council. £250, Power Board £2OO, Harbour Board £l5O, AVaikohu County Council £IOO. Cook County Council £SO, Uawa County Council £42, Gisborne Thirty Thousand Club £212. It is hoped to raise £9OOO in contributions to enable the district to take full'advantage of the subsidy allotted lo the Gisborne district. Honesty Rewarded. At a. recent, sale held in the Waimalui district, one ol' those present lost ii £5 note when lie took his car key out of a. pocket, near the gateway. It >vii« picked up by a jYLaori youth, who gave it to his employer to look after. The owner of the note, when lie discovered his loss went over to his car 'and compeueed searching on the roadway. He was asked it lie had lost a £5 note and when told it had been I’fountli by the Maori youth, he showed 'his generosity after the money had been returned to him. by giving the 'Maori £1 as a reward.
