GENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
OPOTIKI COMMITTEE MEETING MEMORIAL, DISCUSSION There was a large a tendance of delegates at a meeting of the Opotiki Centennial "Celebrations' Committee held in the Labour social room. The Mayor (Mr. G. S. Moody), occupied the chair and asked for suggestions for organising the work of preparation for the celebrations. Mr-, de Montalk moved that M!r. Mocdy be the chairman of the general committee. Seconded by Mr. S. Jephson and carried. Pending the appointment of a secretary, the town clerk acted in that capacity for the meeting. A discussion ensued on the nature of the memorial and celebrations. Air. F. J. Short described the. kind of memorial receiving Government approval. : It. was explained that the Borough Council had applied for £2OO 'subsidy toward the erection of a PJunketi nurse’s rooms, am a •£! to £3 proportion, and that the remainder of. the money required would hape t-o be raised) by subscription, .no subsidy being available on loan money. Air. de Alontalk. moved: That this meeting is in favour of a proposal to erect, as a centennial memorial, a - building incorporating a concert and dance hall, Plunket and rest rooms; and a physical welfare and recreation centre comprising reading and games rooms and gymnasium. The motion-, was seconded by Airs. Fort and carried. Air. de Alontalk moved that a committee be set up to organise a pageant. Air. Short seconded the motipn. The following were appointed with power to add: Alessrs Dutton, del Aiontalk, F. J. Short, and S'. Jephson : Alesdames Fort, Gault, A. E. Alartin, Fox, de Alontalk and Hampton. Airs. AlcC'allion suggested that memorial native trees should be planted in the new school grounds. Airs. Fox proposed that an executive committee of five members be set up, and Alessrs. F. J. Short, liaigent, Hampton, S. Jephson and G. S. Aloody were elected. Oil a proposal by Air. Bridger it wasresolved that the executive committee appoint a general secretary and make recommendations to the whole committee as to the remuneration to bemade for the work. Airs. Hodgson asked whether A would be any objection toi the women’s, organisations commencing to : funds. The matter was left in aJjpy-r. • anee. „
