SUPPORT FOB RAILWAY There was a representative attendance of farmers at the meeting of tlio Opotiki branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held in the St. John’s Hall cn Saturday last. Mr. E. Thompson, president, presided, and in his opening remarks said that in the past the annual meeting of the branch had been liel ( ) and an executive appointed. This committee liad> then held regular monthly meetings and dealt with any matters which were brought before it. The committee however, ielt it wanted more hacking from the members and it had been suggested that more meetings of the branch should be held so that members could bring forward any matters which in their opinion needed ventilating. He therefore wanted an expression of opinion as to whether regular meetings of the branch should be held and whether members would attend, and whether they should be. held once a month or say every throe months. After.a very full discussion it. was unanimously agreed that quarterly; meetings of the members should be held,' that it should be held in the evening buQ not on a Saturday night, and that the executive should fix the time and date.' The chairman referred to the loss to the district in the death of Mr. E. A .Holman and said-he had done a lot for the Opotiki district and he bad been a true friend to many. A motion of sympathy was passed to the family of the late member, this being carried in silence.
Air. A. E. AUartin, the president of the sub-provincial executive then addressed the .meeting and explain ad the workings of the Union from branch meetings to» the sub-provinnal meetings, then to the Auckland executive and finally to the Wellington conference. The proposed railway to. Op .tik. was then discussed! and it was unanimously resolved to request the Prime Minister to carry out his promise to construct the East Coast Alain trunk Bailway frc.ni Taneatua to Opotiki. Reference was made to the proposed public meeting to he called for the purpose of considering railway matters and representatives were elected from this meeting to place the Fanners’ Union view-point before the public meeting. ■The, matter of a hobby calf poo] was also discussed with a representative of the Pig Marketing Association. It was resolved to canvas the district to see what support would he given to the formaFuni. of a hobby calf pool. Beprosontafives were appointed lor the several districts.
