i i: THEFT OF MONEY FINES IMPOSED At- the Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, Stanley F. lverr (Mr. F'. A. Bunkall) was charged before Mr. F. L. Walton, S.M., with' stealing the sums of £lO and £l 12s 4d the property of L. Conway, Raukokore. 4 lie case was’ adjourhbd from the previous monthly sitting and when defendant again failed!' to appear, the magistrate issued a warrant tor arrest.
Later Kerr appeared before the court, pleading guilty. Sergeant J. Isbister, who prosecuted. stated that defendant was employed at Raukokore bridge. On 21st. January. Conway gave him a letter to post containing two £5 notes, asking that the letter be registered. _ On 3rd. February Conway gave defendant £1 12s 4d to pay the butcher, and when defendant: returned he said lie had paid the money. Some time later "Conway questioned defendant about the letter and defendant said: he was quite confident he: had posted it. He said he had put the other’ 'money under the shdp door. Conway’s wife 1 said she had not re* ceived the lettetV*'* * " Defendant when interviewed suggested that on occasions post .office officials had stolen various sums of money.
On the first charge defendant was convicted and fined £lO 'and ordered to make restitution of £lO, and on tlie second charge was ; convicted and fined £2 and ordered to make' restitution of £1 12s 4d.
