MEETING OF CARNIVAL ~ COMMITTEE 'IQ 9 * - ' US/liT ; '±f. ■ ..:G **■■■<■ • "... A meeting of !, 'the -Opotiki Carnival Committee was held -recently inf the Borough Chambers, Mr. T. G. Johnson (chairman) presiding. Mr. Johnson explained!-: that the time had arrived when it appeared the town wouM have a cjhaiice of getting a gymnasium. ...There was a likelihood of the purchase of a suitable -building. The Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee, and the Borough Council were dealing, with the matter. The idea 'was to have proper'places for boxing, games, and other forms of recreation.. They had .an idea it would be a paying proposition. /Boxing tournaments could also be held. No .decent hall was available in the town for dances and people were going to the 'country districts and this was not considered very desirable. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by the secretary*- .-Mi’. S. T. Keen. .It was stated that the money in hand amounted to £26o.*' Mr. S. M. Jephsoh asked who' would control the building if tiici scheme were, put through. He was of the opinion the building should' be under the Borough Council. -• If the scheme went through, tliel Committee’s, money would go toy wards equipment.
Mr; Stevenson suggested 'that the committee decide to spend the money on equipment. , . Mr. Jephson then moved that, wh&ii a suitable building is. available the' committee .spend! up to £260 on fittings and equipment. The motion was seconded by Air.. Hickey and carried. A letter was received from the Opo<tiki Boxing Association asking what the committee’s intentions were in connection with the funds.—lt was pointed out that representatives of the committee who were members of the committee, of , the Boxing Associatfron, could, convey the Carnival Committee’s decision. SPECIAL MIKWIING OF COUNCIL REPORT ON BUILDING At a special meeting oil thei Opotiki Borough Oounc.il, the question of the provision of a- suitable building for indoor l sports and recreational purposes was discussed very' fully and it was finally decided! to secure the services of -nn architect to report on a building which, had been offered fo<r sale, before going any iurtl/er into the question.
