WAIMAM A-NU KU HOU MEETINC (News Correspondent) There was a good attendance of members at the, monthly meeting of tlie Waimana-Nukuhou branch ! of the Women’s Institute. The weather waSi most unkind, rain falling most of they afternoon, but it did not detain members from attending the meeting. Mrs. H. Alarm presided, ancS Airs. C. AA'ylde read the minutes of the previous meeting. The correspondence was- dealt with. All. arrangements were made for the birthday, which is to be held on the 2nd. August, in -the. afternoon,! in the hall as usual and sister Institutes are being invited. AJirs. J err am. is kindly donating thei ingredients for ;n birthday cake and Airs. Eagle is making, and icing the cake. All members are asked to bring a “plate” to with the tea. Mrs. Alarm welcomed Airs. AV'ylde s'enr., Airs-. Hewitt and Airs. W. W arcllaw to the meeting, as they' have' ■been absent for some time owing to illness, and Mrs. AVarcllaw was away in England for several month's. Readings were given by Airs. C. Wylcle and! Airs. Mitchell, and Airs. Davies . sang most sweetly the songs, “When 1 Come Heme”, 'and “Keep on Hopin’.” A luunca'ous sketch, entitled “Alucli a’do about Nothing”, was well presented by Airs. Alitchell and Airs. J. Addison.; Al,embers of the Institute supplied the entertainment at the: Whakatane Institue meeting last Tuesday, Airs. Jerram congratulated Airs. A meeting of the Te Kali a. Women’s Institute i was held in the 'Gallipoli Hall v . the president, Mrs. Tom Pratt, occupying the chair. A satisfactory financial position was repeated by the treasurer. Mrs. Isaac Walker. A demonstration of cane basketry was given by Miss Pound to which the members made a gratifying am active response by setting to work immediately' to try cut the craft. A chat on International Topics was entered into by a number of the members. d There were six entries for the competition, “A Jug of Flowers”, tinprize going to Miss Biartrum. Considering the time of year and the prolonged spell of dry weather, the variety and beauty of the display was amazing. Arising out of the splendid and efficient demonstration by Mrs. Breingan at the last meeting in May, the competition for July will bo an an, example of disliclotli and wool tapestry. Suggestions were made by members for taking a more active part in the afternoon’s entertainment in the mater of games; and. while the attendance, at "the last two meetings has been, good, it was felt that it is the presence of members at the meetings that makes for a bright afternoon. MEETING AT OTARA The monthly- meeting of the Otara Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday, June bth. in, the Otara 11aII. Mrs. W. Gault, president, was in the chair. Atter the usual business, the visiting members from the Waiotahi Institute took, charge,, with Miss Du L’ontet in the chair.- A very excellent programme was presented. Mrs. Burke sang two delightful songs. These were followed by a “.Hidden Words” competition, won by Mrs. W. Gault. An amusing sketch, entitled “Grandma’s Awakening”, ’ was webplayed by Mesclames Loishman, Cunningllani and Newton. i’!{wo further songs, sung by Mrs. C. White were greatly appreciated. A dainty afternoon tea served by Mesclames Gault, Stewart and Miss Lowe, was followed! by- two very interesting demonstrations: Pine needlebaskets by Mrs. Newton and raupc
baskets by Mrs. Cunningham. All members tried their skill in tin “Lambeth Walk”, accompanied by Airs. Logan with her piano accordion. A hearty vote- of thanks was accorded the visitors for their splendid entertainment. Competitions resulted as follows: — Short-oread: Airs, ifttrp 1, Aliss Harrison 2. Bowl of foliage: Airs. Parkinson 1, Airs. Brown 2. The singing- of the Na.tic.nal Anthem brought to a close a most enjoyable afternoon.
