FITNESS CAMPAIGN

THE PERMANENT COMMITTEE FIRST AIEETING HELD The first meeting of the Opotiki Physical Welfare and Recreation Committee was held in the borough chambers last night. Until the appointment of officers, the chair was occupied by the Mayor (Air. G. S. Aloocly), while Air. AAV H. Briggs acted as secretary. .Apologies for absence were received from Airs. R. O’Sullivan and Mr. C. S. Morris. The Alaycr stated that a circular had been reeeive’d from the- Minister, who- had asked for names to be submitted for a permanent district committee. That had been district committee. That had been done and the names Gazetted. Correspondence dealing with the -campaign was readl by Air. Briggs. Air. AY. T. Burrett moved that Air. F J. Short be elected chairman. This was seconded by Air. Button, but Air. Short declined to. accept nomination, stating that circumstances would not allow him to put the necessary time iuto the position as would be necessary. " * ■ Air. Short moved that Air. cfe Alontalk be* elected chairman. Seconded by Air. C. Tabb and carried by acclamation. Air. Button was appointed as a temporary secret ary-trea surer. A vote of thanks was passed to Air. Briggs for his assistance. Air. Short gave a brief report of the recent fitness-week campaign and stated that about £l7 would be handed over to the permanent; committee. The chairman and secretary and Mr. Short were authorised to operate on funds in the Post Office, any two being able to operate the account. A sub-committee comprising the chairman, secretary, Airs. Hampton and Air. Burrett was appointed to go into the various activities of the movement. Air. Burrett said that efforts should be made to secure a suitable building and mentioned! a building that-would be very suitable and thought that efforts should be made to secure this. The sub-committee was requested to go further into this matter and report back to the committee. The secretary was instructed to write to the Alinister and ask for information in respect to methods ol securing necessary finance. The question of addition members was- considered, members being of the opinion that it would lie advantageous to have more enthusiastic supporters of sport on the committee. The secretary was .asked to communicate with the Alinister enquiring if additional members could be added to the committee with the Alinister’s approval.

The question of “carnival” funds was brought forward, Air. Stevenson explaining that the funds were held in trust for the purpose of either buildin.'- a gymnasium or purchase of gymnastic equipment. He said the ti usteos were anxious to make use of the money for the purpose it was raised. It was decided toi make further enquiries about these funds.

Accounts as presented were passed for payment. The next meeting of the committee will be held on June 1.
