DEFENCE LEAGUE Sir.—L attended the meeting addressed by Alnjoi-Geiicrnl Sir Andrew Russell and -Colonel Barrowelough cm Friday night and I listened with interest to their talk on defence, but to me there seejned to bo something lacking. I, as much as anyone, realise that- we must organise and be prepared lor eventualities, but I do not agree with the idea- of Conscription, as it is not in the best interest of..the people. To start with not one person there who spoke or ■ moved! or seconded the motions but were, well over military age, so that conscription would only allcct the other fellow, who must be rounded up, corraied and bioken to tlieir order, and have no say in the matter. Now with all the talk, there was not- a lead given or a concrete idea set forth. All I could see was that a number of people wore required to sign tlieir names, call themselves the Defence League and then call on the 'Government to put tlieir idea of conscription into operation. Now Sir, I would! ask how much farther ahead are we? Here, is my suggestion, if the League is really prepared to do something. All employers- of young men between the ages of 18 and 25, say to them; “The Government is desirous of forming a Defence- Corps. AN hat abont joining up and the week or fortnight you go for trainng, I will do my bit- by paying you your full wages and keep your job open for you and you can have half a day per week for rifle practice.” I guess there would be no dearth of volunteers. Another let every cue join up on a level footing and let ability, only gain them stripes. Don't forget, that the young warrior bar. to fight for your andl my security. Now what about it? OLD SAT ADD Y.
